Tuesday Morning Coffee Hour Series
Jane Kamensky, author of "The Exchange Artist"
10am
Though all but unheard of today, banker and real-estate speculator Andrew Dexter Jr. was widely known—and reviled—in 19th century America, particularly in Boston, where he oversaw the construction of the Exchange Coffee House, a marketplace, hotel and dining venue that was the city’s tallest building. Unfortunately, the Exchange proved the financial ruin of nearly everyone involved and forced Dexter to flee the city. Dexter never stopped believing “that the next hand would be a royal flush” and nearly destroyed the local economy in the process. $5/members, $7/non-members; Season Pass $20/members $30/non-members

First Thursday Lecture: Pilot Boats of Boston Harbor, Past & Present
7pm
Since the eighteenth century, vessels entering Boston Harbor have engaged pilots whose local knowledge of channels and currents guide them safely past potential dangers. Early pilot boats were known for their speed, seaworthiness and maneuverability. Until 1958, when they were replaced by outboards, pilots were rowed to their ships in eighteen foot "yawl boats" crewed by apprentices. Although the nature of the pilot boat has changed over the years, today Boston Harbor pilotage is very similar to what it was historically. Boston pilots remain among the most highly skilled and trained mariners in the port. Andy Hammond of the Boston Harbor Pilot Association will be the speaker. $3 members, $5 non-members.

Japanese Tea Ceremony
2:00pm
Tea Ceremony Presentations are held in the tea hut situated in a Japanese garden on the museum grounds. The Art Complex Tea Hut, Shofuan,"Wind in The Pines Hut" was designed by Kojiro Tomita's long time friend Gofu Sano and built in Kyoto Japan in 1969. It was reassembled here in 1975 and dedicated to the Tomitas at an inaugural tea ceremony. Shofuan is a traditional san jo daime (3and 3/4 size) hut - Japanese huts are described by the number of mats they accommodate. There are two single fusuma (sliding doors), connecting the tea room with the mizuya (kitchen area), where all the preparations are made for the tea meal (kaiseki) and the tea ceremony.
