Back Roads of the South Shore is a collaborative of a dozen leading historical organizations in seven towns along the South Shore of Massachusetts. The group is dedicated to creating an awareness of the area's historic gems and celebrating the heritage and spirit of the region. Historic sites from Hingham to Plymouth include - Hingham Historical Society’s Old Ordinary and Old Derby Academy, the Hull Lifesaving Museum, Cohasset Historical Society’s Captain John Wilson House and Maritime Museum, the Isaac Winslow House, Daniel Webster Estate and Marcia Thomas Museum in Marshfield, Duxbury Rural & Historical Society’s King Caesar House and Gershom Bradford House, and the Alden Kindred’s John Alden House, the Jones River Historical Society’s Major John Bradford House in Kingston. In Plymouth there are three Plymouth Antiquarian Society houses - Harlow Old Fort House, Hedge House and Spooner House, John Howland Society’s the Jabez Howland House and Pilgrim Hall Museum, America’s oldest public museum.
The group's cooperative endeavors have led to the publication of a joint brochure that guides visitors to these historic sites along and just off of Plymouth County's Route 3A.
Back Roads" produces a History Symposium every spring. The 2010 Symposium “Summer Folk: the Story of Tourism on the South Shore” will be held on Saturday, April 10.
