Ukrainian-Style Egg Decorating

Saturday, April 1, 2017 - 10:00am to 1:00pm

Participants will learn a traditional wax resist method of decorating eggs as practiced by the Ukrainian people. Using a metal stylus which is heated in an open candle flame, thin layers of beeswax are applied to the egg shell before dipping it into brilliant liquid dyes. The wax protects the surface so that multiple colors can be applied. To finish, the wax is melted off to reveal a spectrum of color and pattern. The cultural meaning of traditional motifs will be explained and demonstrated but the focus of the class is on technique.

We'll waltz our way into Tchaikovsky's enduring, enchanting ballet suite, Sleeping Beauty, and then meander into Café Neon, the Greek-inspired composition by our very own music director and conductor, Steven Karidoyanes. Finally, we'll tumble amid the Jets and the Sharks, love and loyalty, with Bernstein's passionate score to West Side Story.
