First Thursday Lecture: Researching the Lost Crew of the Portland
7:00pm
The devastating "Portland Gale" that struck New England on November 27, 1898 bears the name of the steamship Portland, wrecked as she attempted to make the return trip from Boston Harbor to Portland, Maine. With all 192 passengers and crew tragically lost with the ship, the Portland is one of the worst disasters in New England maritime history. The location of the wreck had long been one of the great mysteries of Massachusetts Bay, until recent underwater archaeology efforts at the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary revealed the wreck site. Sadly, much of the Portland's documentation went down with the ship, making the crew and passenger lists something of a mystery as well. Walter Hickey, Archives Specialist at the National Archives Northeast Region in Waltham, has followed a paper trail of archival materials, including deceased seaman's papers filed by the victims' families, to carefully identify the crew of the Portland. Please join us to hear how dedicated research has helped to solve one of the steamer's many mysteries. $3 members, $5 non-members

What’s in the Woods? & What’s on the Water?
9:30-11:30am & 12:30-2:30pm
What a bargain! It’s a double-header of winter birding on the South Shore. Winter finches announced their arrival quite loudly during the fall, and coupled with our regular seasonal residents, visits to nearby woodlands this winter should be interesting to say the least. We’ll start the day there, break for lunch at the North River Wildlife Sanctuary, and then hit the ocean to see what’s brewing offshore. We’ll be looking for finches and grosbeaks, scoters and grebes, and more. Who knows what we’ll find?
Fee: $15/$12 for each half day; $25/$20 for both programs together

Don and John - Lasting Impressions
Inspired by the Impressionists, Don Dacier's primary focus over the years has been on plein air painting-painting outdoors. Whether landscape, still life, figure, or abstract, he uses color, texture and imagination to evoke the beauty in and around him. Combined with fine art studies at the MFA School, Mass. College of Art, and the Art Institute of Boston, Don's experience as a technical illustrator has enhanced his ability to convey his vision onto the canvas. His oil paintings reside in collections throughout the U.S. and Europe.
Long-time Hanover resident, John Nutter earned his BA at Bridgewater State College with a concentration in fine arts. He enrolled in a pastel class with North River Art Society instructor Liz Haywood-Sullivan, and also completed a workshop given by Albert Handell and Anita Louise West. John is a member of numerous art organizations, and his works have won a number of awards. Show runs November 19-January 12
