Once the site of a thriving ship-building industry. From 1640 to the late 1800's, the 15 North River shipyards launched more than 1,000 ships including the brig Beaver of Boston Tea Party fame and the Columbia, first ship to carry the American flag around the world. Prior to the great storm of 1898, the mouth of the North and South Rivers was located at the southern end of Humarock, making the boundary between the town of Scituate and Marshfield.
