National Monument to the Forefathers

Located on an 11 acre hilltop site on Allerton Street, this impressive 81-foot-tall granite statue stands to commemorate the Pilgrims who arrived in Plymouth in 1620. The monument was designed primarily by Boston sculptor Hammatt Billings, whose original design called for it to be nearly twice as tall - 150 feet (just under the Statue of Liberty’s height of 151 feet). The monument features several allegorical figures depicting virtues that the Pilgrims, known in Plymouth as the Forefathers, brought with them when they arrived here. In addition to the beautiful light displays throughout the gardens, the event features nightly performances at 6:30 pm in the Automobile Gallery. St. Nick will hold court in the 1913 Model T Ford. Families can view a stunning model train display and create a craft together to take home. People of all ages can take a spin (or two) on the vintage carousel and roast marshmallows together at the fire pits. On Saturdays, Chip Koser of South Cape Ice Sculptures will demonstrate ice carving, giving visitors the opportunity to see an ice sculpture created right before their eyes, and to take their photos with the sculptures.
