Pottery: Intro to Wheel Throwing

This 8-week course focuses on all the basics of working on a pottery wheel. This introductory-level course is for beginner through advanced students with individualized instruction that will cover basic skills, control, and self-expression, as well as surface decoration and glazing. Basic to advanced wheel throwing techniques will be taught. Techniques for making a variety of forms such as plates, bowls, vases, pitchers and coffee mugs will be demonstrated. All materials, glaze and firing fees included with class fee. Class runs Sundays, September 29-November 17, 2019 from 10am-12:30pm.

Japanese Tea Ceremony

Tea Ceremony Presentations are given at 2pm in the tea hut situated in a Japanese garden on the museum grounds. Admission is free. The 2019 tea ceremonies are scheduled on three Sundays: June 30, July 28 and September 29.

The Art Complex Tea Hut, Shofuan,"Wind in The Pines Hut" was designed by Kojiro Tomita's long time friend Gofu Sano and built in Kyoto Japan in 1969. It was reassembled here in 1975 and dedicated to the Tomitas at an inaugural tea ceremony.

Pottery: Handbuilding in Clay

Wednesday, October 2, 2019 - 10:00am

6-week course. Experience the joy of using your hands to create unique ceramic pieces. We will combine a variety of hand-building techniques including: slab, coil, and pinch, to create sculptural and functional objects. Glazing and surface decorating will also be covered, all work will be fired in the kiln. Finished work will be safe for food and drink. All materials, glaze and firing fees included with class fee.
Class runs Wednesdays, October 2-November 6, 10am-1pm.

Participants will be admitted to an “Employees Only” collection storage area to get up-close and personal with unique artifacts. During the tour, Jennifer and the expert will share little-known facts and stories about the objects.
