D’un matin de printemps (Of a Spring Morning), a tone poem by the forever young composer Lili Boulanger captures the awakening with its delicate musical brushstrokes morphing to brilliant climax. Our vernal promenade continues as the South Shore Conservatory Youth Orchestra sits side-by-side with the Phil for Georges Bizet’s L’Arlesienne, Suite No. 1, or The Girl from Arles, music depicting a sad tale of youthful promise, love and loss. The magnificence of composer Gustav Mahler abounds with Symphony No. 1, Titan, a bold, blooming piece calling for our largest orchestra of the season! Unconventional in many ways, Mahler’s over-the-top piece radiates irony, humanity and imagination. This symphony is inspiring, poetic, and at times cosmic!
