Thousands of fore-and-aft rigged wooden vessels once sailed the eastern coast, carrying the cargoes that fueled our nation's development. But by 1938, as the age of commercial sail drew to a close, only a scattering of working coasters remained. Among them was the schooner Coral of Fairhaven, Massachusetts, under Captain Claude S. Tucker. How could the Coral, a 60-year veteran of the coastal trade, and Captain Tucker, her owner-operator for the previous 23 years, have survived so late into this era?

Set sail with authors Bob Demanche and Don Tucker as they venture to familiar ports south of Cape Cod and bring to life the story of The Last of the Fairhaven Coasters. Featuring vintage photographs, yarns, and audio recordings, the talk also highlights interesting aspects of the coastal trade of Boston and the South Shore.
