SPECIAL EXHIBIT: “The First Thanksgiving-1621” by Karen Rinaldo
In 1994, The National Association of Congregational Christian Churches commissioned artist Karen Rinaldo of Falmouth, MA, to create the first historically accurate painting of the first Thanksgiving celebration as a gift to the nation. The project took over six months to research and complete. The oil on canvas depicts the 51 Pilgrims and 91 Wampanoag Indians who gathered at Plimoth Plantation in 1621 for what would become known as the First Thanksgiving. The painting has appeared in numerous textbooks and been exhibited at the Pilgrim Hall Museum and Plymouth Plantation, both in Plymouth, MA, among other locations. On loan from the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches, the painting will be exhibited at the Falmouth Museums on the Green through 2020 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrim’s landing in the New World.
