An Evening with Kat Wright

Friday, September 13, 2019 - 8:00pm

Kat Wright, whose voice is both sultry and dynamic, delicate yet powerful; gritty but highly emotive and nuanced, has been described as “a young Bonnie Raitt meets Amy Winehouse”. Add to that voice enough stage presence to tame lions, and the combination of feline femininity proves immediately enchanting. There’s soul flowing in and out of her rock ‘n’ roll with a serpentine seduction. Some of soul music’s sweet, grand dames belt, shout, seethe, and succumb, while Wright sings gently like a heartache’s apology. It’s funky in spots and beautiful all over. THE PHIL’S OPENING NIGHT CONCERT - SYMPHONIC SPECTACULAR

Saturday, September 28, 2019 - 7:30pm

While The Sorcerer’s Apprentice cautions about the consequences of unleashed power, this opening night piece shows no restraint.  Its whirling, brilliant, playful instrumentation rises to an insistent climax as the music evokes visions of marching mops gone wild!  Composer Paul Dukas drew his inspiration from that very story as described in the poem by Goethe, and popularized by Walt Disney’s film Fantasia.  Elena Roussanova Lucas’ Suite: Moments of Arrival sparks wonder and reflection with music illustrating the spirit of nature and the excitement of travel.  Sai Read more about THE PHIL’S OPENING NIGHT CONCERT - SYMPHONIC SPECTACULAR

Bluegrass royalty Leigh and Eric Gibson step into what some might at first see as uncharted territory on their country-soul breakout Mockingbird, the new album produced by Grammy Award winners Dan Auerbach and Fergie Ferguson. The celebrated bluegrass duo — named back-to-back Entertainers of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association in 2012 and 2013 — played the Nashville game two decades ago, while in their early 20s, and were offered a major label deal, only to be told at the last minute that they were too “retro” for modern country music. Saturday, October 12, 2019 - 8:00pm

Rick is a 40-year veteran of the rock’n’roll wars. He began his recording career in 1970 with the Flying Burrito Brothers and was a major contributor to their last two albums. He went on to do two solo albums and then form the well-known band Firefall in 1974, with whom he played for seven years during their heyday. Larry Burnett’s songs and singing added a diversity and edginess, as well as an irony in his own observations in affairs of the heart, which broadened the band’s fan base and life span. Johnny Hoy and the Bluefish

Saturday, October 19, 2019 - 8:00pm

Formed in 1991, the band has evolved through many incarnations, three Tone Cool and two self-produced CDs, trips around the world as far as South Africa and mostly the joys of playing a lot of music on Martha's Vineyard where most of them live. The band started out as a four-piece with no piano, became a five-piece for several years, and then returned to a four-piece configuration, this time with no bass, and it's been that way for over 10 years. Amy Helm (Acoustic)

Saturday, October 26, 2019 - 8:00pm

Amy Helm sought what she calls a “circular sound” for her new album. It’s a well-rounded one, one marked by streaks of Americana, country, blues, and gospel, and the kinds of four-part harmonies that can burst open a melody and close the loop of an octave. And sentimentally, it’s a sound that represents the feeling of community. This Too Shall Light, released September 21, 2018 on Yep Roc Records, comprises 10 songs produced by Grammy-winning producer and songwriter Joe Henry. Read more about Amy Helm (Acoustic)

John Sebastian at the Spire Center

Saturday, November 2, 2019 - 8:00pm

Over four decades the contributions of John Sebastian have become a permanent part of our American musical fabric. His group The Lovin’ Spoonful played a major role in the mid-’60s rock revolution, but what leader, singer and songwriter Sebastian had in mind was actually a counter-revolution. “We were grateful to the Beatles for reminding us our rock & roll roots,” John explains, “but we wanted to cut out the English middlemen, so to speak, and get down to making this new music as an 'American’ band.” Read more about John Sebastian at the Spire Center
